![]() What Brooks learned in these four quite different educational settings provided the basis for much of her poetic investigation of race, class, and social interchange within Chicago, and by extension, within the United States as a whole.īrooks’ education in poetry came from markedly diverse sources. Brooks then went on to graduate from Wilson Junior College. ![]() Although she graduated from Chicago’s integrated Englewood High School, Brooks also attended Hyde Park High School, the leading white high school in the city, and the all-black Wendell Phillips High. Her family moved to Chicago shortly after her birth, and throughout her life, Brooks remained faithful to the city's South Side.
